Britpop Invasion

Seiring dengan munculnya era globalisasi yang meruntuhkan batas-batas di setiap negara, muncul budaya-budaya yang mengekspansi Indonesia dari luar, sebut saja K-pop, J-pop, dan westernisasi. Globalisasi, di Indonesia sendiri, malah memunculkan fenomena masyarakat konsumen (Featherstone, 1991), fenomena masyarakat konsumen itu sendiri muncul akibat runtuhnya batasan negara karena teknologi informasi, hal tersebut kemudian memunculkan ekspansi komoditas kapitalis besar-besaran yang bertujuan untuk membangkitkan kesenangan (leisure). Dari berbagai negara yang mengekpansi Indonesia dengan produknya, ada satu negara yang telah mengekspansi budaya populer yang memang telah lama menjadi tren di negaranya yaitu Inggris.

Dekade 90an adalah flower generation nya kebudayaan Inggris, dalam dekade tersebut Kebudayaan Inggris banyak diekspansi oleh kebudayaan Amerika, Kokain, gaya hidup kaum Hippie, free sex, dan segala macamnya, hal tersebut ditandai dengan boomingnya band Nirvana yang mengusung musik grunge. Musik grungeyang menjadi mainstream berhasil menghipnotis anak-anak muda Inggris dengan liriknya yang easy listening, musiknya yang menghentak-hentak, dan filosofi hidupgrunge yang juga sesuai dengan keinginan anak-anak muda tersebut, “hidup untuk hari ini.”

Tidak hanya anak muda yang terhipnotis, agaknya para pemusik lokal Inggris menjadikan grunge dan Nirvana menjadi kiblat musik mereka, sebut saja Slowdive,Ride, dan Sleeper yang numpang tenar seiringan dengan menancapnya taji musikgrunge di daratan Britania, bisa dikatakan, musik grunge merupakan trigger bagi mereka untuk mengembangkan budaya populer Inggris yang biasa disebut Britpop.

Tonggak Britpop pertama kali ditancapkan pada tahun 1990, saat itu The Stone Roses berhasil mengambil hati anak muda Inggris dengan menyukseskan konser mereka di Spike Island, Merseyside, pada saat itu ada lebih dari 20.000 anak muda yang menonton konser mereka, Jon Savage, jurnalis musik dan pengarang bukuUnseen Pleasure mengatakan, “pada saat itu aku melihat anak kecil, merokok banyak ganja dan memakai banyak narkoba.”

Bersama dengan musik-musik halusinogenik 60an yang kembali tenar pada tahun 1990, tahun 1991 muncul band Nirvana yang mengusung musik Grunge dan masuk ke Inggris dan bersaing dengan musik-musik lokal, pada saat itu Inggris dipenuhi dengan dominasi musik-musik dari Amerika Serikat membuat scene musik lokal Inggris hampir punah.

Adalah Suede, pada akhir 1991, berhasil menyingkirkan dominasi musik GrungeAmerika Serikat, ditandai dengan cover majalah Select yang bertuliskan “Yanks Go Home! SUEDE”.
Suede dan Blur adalah band Inggris yang pertama kali mempelopori gerakan musik britpop untuk melawan dominasi musik Amerika, menurut mereka, musik Britpop adalah musik unik asli Inggris yang mengangkat tema British dan berbagai macam masalahnya.

Tingginya perhatian musik Britpop terhadap pertentangan kelas antara kelas pekerja dan kelas atas (kerajaan dan pemerintah) membuat Britpop sebagai media kritis melalui musik yang dijadikan kiblat masyarakat Inggris dalam memerangi pertentangan kelas, tingginya perhatian Britpop atas hal-hal tersebut memunculkan budaya chauvinis yang agak berlebihan, hal itu ditandai dengan munculnya lagu-lagu berlirik nasionalisme yang dikemas secara populer, sebut saja Cock Sparrer dengan England Belongs To Me, seperti tidak mau ketinggalan, Blur juga menuangkan kritiknya melalui lagu.

Tahun 1994, Blur merilis albumnya yang berjudul Parklife,  terinspirasi oleh potret sosial masyarakat Inggris tahun 1990an yang penuh dengan kesenjangan, Damon Albarn (Vokalis Blur) berpendapat bahwa, “For me, Parklife is like a loosely linked concept album involving all these different stories. It’s the travels of the mystical lager-eater, seeing what’s going on in the world and commenting on it.”

Tahun 1994 juga merupakan tahun berduka bagi para penikmat musik Grunge di Inggris, ditemukan meninggal di rumahnya, Seattle, Kurt Cobain, vokalis Nirvana, meninggal karena bunuh diri, hal itu memicu kesedihan berkepanjangan, tidak hanya bagi fans, tetapi juga bagi industri musik Inggris, dan pada saat yang tepat itulah Oasismuncul, Jon Savage mengatakan, “apa yang terjadi dengan Kurt Cobain merupakan pukulan berat bagi industri musik Inggris, dan Oasis datang di saat yang tepat.”

Definitely Maybe, album debut yang dirilis Oasis tahun 1994, berhasil menduduki tangga pertama UK Album Chart juga pada tahun yang sama, ini merupakan penjualan tercepat yang dicatat pertama kali dalam sejarah permusikan Inggris karena berhasil menjual 2,5 juta keping dan tujuh kali Platinum, seperti yang dicatat oleh BPI.

“Ada sesuatu yang telah terjadi sekarang ini , generasi baru yang telah muncul akan berkembang dan mendesak American Mass Culture, maupun itu musik, film, TV, permainan komputer, dahulu didominasi oleh Amerika, dan saya pikir generasi Brit yang muncul pada tahun ini merupakan perwakilan, perwakilan dari sikap nasionalisme yang meruntuhkan hegemoni dari budaya Amerika itu sendiri, mereka menampilkan musik baru, gaya yang baru, yang lebih anti Amerika, yang lebih menunjukkan sisi Britishnya.” Terang Toby Young, editor di majalah Vanity Fair.

“Labour Coming Home” adalah kalimat terkenal Tony Blair mengenai konsep politiknya yang baru yaitu New Labour, dengan merangkul musisi British yang terkenal pada saat itu, Tony Blair berhasil memperoleh dukungan sehingga terpilih menjadi Perdana Menteri Inggris termuda berumur 42 tahun setelah Lord Liverpool pada tahun 1812.

Periode dimana Tony Blair meruntuhkan konsep konservatif yang telah berjalan selama lebih dari 17 tahun dengan konsep New Labournya bisa disebut sebagai periode Cool Britannia, periode tersebut juga merupakan sukses bagi industri musik lokal Inggris (Britpop) yang berhasil memberikan optimisme bagi masyarakat Inggris.

Tahun 1997, mendapat dukungan dari kaum pekerja dan musisi tenar Inggris, Partai Pekerja pipmpinan Tony Blair berhasil memenangkan pemilu dan menjadikan Tony Blair sebagai perdana menteri Inggris termuda, pada tahun inilah, merupakan puncak dari masa kejayaan Britpop.

Masuknya Britpop ke Indonesia

Saat Britpop masih mengembangkan sayapnya di Britania Raya, pada saat itu jugalah MTV pertama kali mengudara di Indonesia, tepatnya pada 1 Januari 1993, MTV Indonesia bersama dengan Nickelodeon Indonesia ditayangkan di ANTV, MTV yang merupakan kepanjangan dari Music Television ini didominasi oleh tayangan-tayangan musik mancanegara (khususnya Amerika dan Inggris).

Di Indonesia sendiri, tahun 1993 adalah tahun dimana masyarakat Indonesia sedang dijejali dengan kebebasan yang semu, setelah hampir 20 tahun “terkungkung” dalam ketatnya rezim Orde Lama, masyarakat Indonesia pada tahun tersebut banyak dijejali dengan kebebasan dan hiburan (leisure) yang kebanyakan merupakan produk import oleh Orde Baru, segala jenis produk bermerk luar negeri muncul dan mengekspansi Indonesia, mulai dari merk pakaian, gaya hidup, musik, samapai kepada acara televisi, contohnya MTV.

Perubahan rezim mendadak dari Orde Lama ke Orde Baru “mengaburkan” identitas nasional masyarakat Indonesia itu sendiri, akibatnya, setiap produk luar negeri yang masuk ke Indonesia akan diserap oleh masyarakat secara masif tanpa mengerti tujuan dan asal-usulnya, selayaknya jarum yang disuntikkan ke tubuh pasien.

Sesuai dengan teori norma budaya, rezim Orde Baru yang membiarkan media massa menayangkan tayangan import (khususnya MTV), secara tidak langsung dan tidak sadar membangun konstruksi sosial dimana masyarakat Indonesia akan berpikir bahwa sesuatu telah terjadi, tepatnya, masyarakat Indonesia akan berpikir bahwa acara tersebut (MTV) merupakan perwakilan dari modernitas yang masuk dan harus diikuti oleh para kawula muda.

Maraknya dominasi musik-musik luar di dalam tv juga mengakibatkan pergeseran makna di kalangan anak muda, dahulu mereka menganggap tv hanya sebagai sarana menambah informasi dan hiburan semata saja, tetapi setelah munculnya MTV, mereka menganggap bahwa menonton MTV bukan lagi merupakan sarana penambah informasi semata, tetapi juga menjadi bentuk identitas baru yaitu situasi sosial dimana mereka bisa disebut “keren”, pada saat itu, acara dan konten di MTV merupakan bahan obrolan wajib bagi para anak muda demi menunjukkan eksistensi mereka sebagai anak muda yang “keren”.

Meninggalnya vokalis Nirvana, yaitu Kurt Cobain, menjadi turning point untuk budaya Britpop bisa melebarkan “sayapnya” di kancah dunia, perlahan tapi pasti, tenggelamnya Grunge membuat Britpop bisa mendominasi dunia, khususnya Indonesia melalui saluran MTV.

Sampai saat ini, Britpop yang tidak hanya menjadi aliran musik pun akhirnya berubah menjadi suatu bentuk budaya dengan produk-produknya yang beragam, sebut saja fashion, subkultur Mods, Vespa, Punk Oi!, dan sepak bola, semuanya memegang peranan besar dalam mengekspansi budayanya yang berlabel British ke Indonesia, adapun kenyataannya, pudarnya musik Rock British tahun 1990an macam Oasis dan koleganya yang pada saat itu diyakini sebagai Mainstream dari Britpop harus tersingkirkan oleh musik-musik baru yang muncul di dekade 2000an, sebut sajaColdplay, Robbie Williams, Arctic Monkeys dan Two Door Cinema Club, mereka menggeser genre Britpop yang tadinya bermusik keras, anthemic dan lirik-lirik yang menggambarkan situasi sosial masyarakat British saat itu menjadi Britpop yang segar,ear catching, dan lirik-lirik yang tak jarang menggambarkan situasi romantisme saat ini.

Walaupun genre Britpop sudah mengalami pergeseran arti, tetapi makna yang sudah dibangun bertahun-tahun nyatanya tetap melekat, makna dimana pendengar musikBritish khususnya masyarakat Inggris menganggap bahwa rasa nasionalisme terhadap tanah airnya tidak akan pernah padam, bagi mereka, Britpop adalah perlambangan nasionalisme dan semangat optimisme mereka terhadapa kemajuan negerinya sendiri, yaitu Britania Raya, mengutip lirik England Belongs To Me dari Cock Sparrer, dedengkot band Punk Oi! Inggris 70an, agaknya cocok untuk dijadikan sebuah penutup yang manis, England belong’s to me! A nation’s pride the dirty water on the rivers, no one can take away our memory, Oh Oh, England belongs to me! (MFA)
